Tools to Protect: Confronting Elder Exploitation

The PEP Coalition (Partnerships for Elder Protection) combined their skills and resources to educate and increase awareness of elder abuse by presenting a one day conference on Thursday, May 25 in Billings.

Bob Blancato, the National Coordinator of the Elder Justice Coalition, Washington, DC was the keynote speaker and shared a national perspective on elder abuse challenges. Rick Bartos, DPHHS, Adult Protective Services and Margaret Gallagher, Senior Deputy Yellowstone County Attorney,  provided definitions on elder abuse and Montana statistics. The remainder of the day included 3 panels: Fraud, Prosecution Challenges and Power of Attorney and Court Ordered Guardianships. Also Billings physician, Dr. Larry Severa presented on Diminished Capacity.  Many special thanks to the sponsors US Bank, MDU, AARP and the local and statewide presenters.
